I drove an X5M tonight, power is pretty damn good and the sound is amazing. But I was given instructions on how it works, why? The transmission has no park gear. It has a parking brake, but you are under no obligation to use it. Seriously, you can just turn the car off while the transmission is in drive, reverse or neutral and the car couldnt care less.

It makes no sense to me...

it probably automatically goes into Park when you shut the car off.

This would be good for me. I sometimes forget to put autos into park. I shut of the engine, then I’m like “WTF why is the key stuck!....oh yeah.” Then my wife acts like I’m stupid and I remind her that she should have bought a manual trans car.

My stickshift has no park gear. It has a parking break, but you are under no obligation to use it. Seriously, you can just turn the car off while the transmission is in first, second, third, fourth, fifth, reverse or neutral and the car couldn’t care less.

Yeah. I don't trust that at all. I don't even trust the park in the 4runner. I always use park and the parking brake.

I mean, it’s all electronic anyways. So it kinda makes sense. Also, that brown combined with the black + brown stitching is super awesome.

So does it work like a sequential shifter, and just resets to first, or something when you stop?

Not really new, but definitely foreign to the regular automotive world.

Automatic equipped buses, medium duty trucks, etc. have no park selection. You must use the parking brake... so can brake while you park.

Like I said though, there is no requirement to use the parking brake in this case.

The rich and famous simply cannot be bothered with shifting into park. Takes too much time out of their day.

Unless you leave it in neutral AND choose not to use the parking brake, that could end badly.

So is there a parking pawl, perhaps one that’s activated electronically without the driver’s input?

While Mercedes has a button to engage park, it isn’t a necessity. Been this way on quite a few models for a few years now. BMW probably works similarly. Either the park pawl is engaged electronically, or the the parking brake is engaged electronically.
